“I’ve had the pleasure-and sometimes trauma-of witnessing some of the country’s top chefs in action from a front-row seat. It has made for some vivid storytelling at parties (and perversely made me a popular guest),” excerpt from Getting Sauced by Karen S. Katz.

A few days ago, I received a gifted copy of Getting Sauced by Karen S. Katz and couldn’t wait to dive into this memoir. As an avid watcher of food TV shows for decades I couldn’t wait to get the behind-the-scenes scoop on what really happens on set. How do they make hours and hours of food TV and make it look so effortless? Getting Sauced by Karen S. Katz shares the scoop – she served as executive producer of Emeril Live during its peak so she definitely has the inside details.

Karen S. Katz has a gift for storytelling and as you read her memoir it paints such a vivid picture that you feel like you are in the room with her. She talks about her humble food beginnings with her mom’s weekly set menu and her Nana’s delicious food. As her career in food TV flourished so did her love of food and cooking. She compared her time in food TV to a culinary education and I can only imagine all of the things you can pick up over time on a food TV set.

The memoir includes moments with so many chefs including Julia Child, Bobby Flay, and Rocco DiSpirito. Of course, Emeril is a key part of this memoir with Karen sharing heartwarming and funny stories of the events she experienced around him. I’ve always been a fan of Emeril and wondered what he is like in real life and now I feel like I have some insight into who he is.

Getting Sauced is the first book I’ve read in a while that I just couldn’t put down. It was the perfect relaxing weekend read – although I was getting really hungry while reading it. I need to find and make Emeril’s lobster risotto recipe soon! Don’t worry if you want to find another recipe, she does include some of her favorite recipes inside the memoir including Feeling Sorry for Myself Grilled Cheese Sandwich – which sounds delicious.

I would recommend Getting Sauced to all food TV lovers – it is the perfect blend of funny and heartwarming although it may cause a serious case of food envy. Make sure you pick yours up today.
