The College Kitchen: 10 Cookbooks Every Student Should Own

    September 10, 2026 / No Comments

Heading off to college is a big transition for both students and their parents! Between packing everything they’ll need, getting organized and making sure they’re ready for this next chapter, there’s a lot to think about. One thing that can easily get overlooked is cooking. Many college students now have access to kitchens and are cooking more of their own meals rather than relying on the campus meal plan. Having a few basic cooking skills and a few good cookbooks is a huge help! My own love of cookbooks began in college. I had plenty of baking experience before heading off to school, but my cooking skills were another story! I remember turning…

Warm Your Bones: Cozy Recipes for Chilly Days and Winter Nights

    May 5, 2026 / No Comments

Cookbook By: Vanessa Seder “Warm Your Bones assumes that using a stove and oven and warming up your kitchen is a good thing; thus long, slow-cooking processes like braising, roasting, baking, and stewing come into rotation,” Vanessa Seder. I had no idea when I bought Warm Your Bones: Cozy Recipes for Chilly Days and Winter Nights that it was written by someone who lives in Maine. That’s where my mom’s side of the family is from and where I was born.  No matter what time of year it is I find myself turning to cozy recipes. • Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year I share the story of how suicide has impacted the people I have cared about in hope that it can help at least one person.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I was in middle school when I first learned about suicide. A friend of mine from baton twirling class shot and killed herself. I still remember my mom telling me the news. It was the first time I realized how much people can hide when they are struggling - she always seemed so happy. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
When I was a sophomore in college, one of my roommates struggled with suicidal thoughts. Multiple times she threatened to hurt herself and we were able to help her get into counseling. One morning she told me she wasn't feeling well and was going to stay home, I said okay and hurried out the door as I was running late. As I was pulling out of the driveway, she came running out of the door and jumped into my car, as I was her ride to work and school. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What I didn't know was that a few minutes before she had swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. Thankfully she got throw up sick at campus and wound up in the hospital. She survived and got the help she really needed. I would be lying if I said I never thought about what the outcome would have been if she stayed home alone. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I'd love to say that's the last time I have been exposed to someone who had suicidal thoughts, but it wasn't. My ex-fiancé struggled with alcoholism and his mental health - many times he wished he was dead and no matter how much I tried to help him, it never seemed to make a difference. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with alcoholism in 2024.⁣
⁣⁣
It's not easy for most people to admit they are struggling mentally. Over the years I have learned the best thing we can do is be there and check in with our friends and loved ones. Even the ones that seem so strong still need people to check in on them to make sure they are okay.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Please remember your mental health matters and the mental health of your friends and family matters too. Don't be afraid to reach out for help.⁣⁣⁣

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

Do you find yourself wanting breakfast anytime of day? I do! Let’s take a look inside Brunch Season: A Year of Delicious Mornings from the Buttermilk Kitchen to see what new inspiration we can find for our favorite meal or at least my favorite meal. Chef Suzanne utilizes seasonal ingredients in her recipes to elevate brunch. The recipes include Perfectly Scrambled Eggs, Baby Vidalia Casserole with Bacon, Heirloom Tomato Toasts, Summer Squash Omelet with Ricotta, Glazed Apple Cider Doughnuts, Poached Eggs in Maple Syrup, Breakfast Fried Rice, Brunch Board with French Toast Crostini, and Mocha Hot Chocolate. First to try on my list is the poached eggs in maple syrup as I love maple. What sounds yummy to you?
