    Home Grown

    March 9, 2021 / No Comments

“If you grew up in New England, my hope is that these recipes resonate with you, that they feel familiar. And if you’ve never set foot in this great region, I hope this gives you a glimpse-and a taste-of the place I’m proud to call home,” Matt Jennings. When I first came across Home Grown: Cooking From My New England Roots I was really excited to get some more recipes that reminded me of all of the food I ate when visiting Maine as a kid. My Mom’s family is all from Maine and even though I didn’t grow up there I was the third generation to be born in Maine. Looking through…

    The Saltwater Table

    March 2, 2021 / 1 Comment

“There are times for indulging, and there are times for simplicity. This book is a set of recipes for all seasons of eating. Cooking is an adventure. Go light a fire, get outside, and look for that little bit of untamed Cumberland Island in your backyard, or wherever you may be,” Whitney Otawka. I grew up going to Tybee Island, Georgia and eating delectable meals while there. The Saltwater Table cookbook brings back so many of those wonderful memories for me. This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I own, it scares me that I am going to get something on it, but to be honest isn’t the sign of a great…

    13 Cooking Methods Defined

    February 25, 2021 / No Comments

One thing recipes have in common is that they all include a cooking method. Some home chefs are confident and understand every type of cooking method. However, for some home chefs they could really use some clarification as to what each method means. Below is a list of thirteen often used cooking methods and their descriptions.  Bake Merriam-Webster Definition: to cook by dry heat especially in an oven.*  Bake is one of the most common directions in recipes. If you want to make a cake or brownies you need to bake them. You can also bake chicken or fish in the oven. The term bake can be used for regular ovens, pizza ovens, convection…

    One Pan, Two Plates

    February 23, 2021 / 1 Comment

“I can’t help you with your laundry or bills, but One Pan, Two Plates can help you get a healthful meal on the table in less time and with less cleanup. All the dishes are complete made-from-scratch meals, with one-pan cleanup and ready to eat in less than 1 hour (many less than 30 minutes),” Carla Snyder. As someone who mostly cooks for two people I bought this cookbook years ago. I have always been interested in making meals that do not have a lot of leftovers, since I am not a huge fan of them. One Pan, Two Plates offers a wide variety of meals that are great to feed two people.

    Dreaming of Dinner in Paris

    February 18, 2021 / No Comments

Lately I have asked myself, “If you could eat dinner anywhere in the world today, where would it be?” For me the answer is always the same: Paris. As long as I can remember I have loved Paris and France in general. I used to have a pen pal, Valerie, when I was in middle school and she was from France, maybe that is where my love of France first came from.  My first visit to Paris was during my semester abroad my senior year of college. I lived in London and went on a three day trip to Paris, it was even better than I could have imagined. Two years ago I…

    Dinner With Mr Darcy

    February 9, 2021 / No Comments

“So I hope you will enjoy rustling up some ‘rout cake’ for your card parties, or impressing your own Mr. Darcy with venison and roast partridges and, above all, that you will enjoy tasting your way into Jane Austen’s England,” Pen Vogler. My favorite novel is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. When I saw this cookbook online I immediately wanted it to make the meals myself. I was surprised by the wide variety of meals in Dinner with Mr Darcy from mutton to veal to muffins and cakes. Some of the recipes were very simple and easy to make, however, some of the recipes have very hard to locate ingredients.

I’ve been a huge fan of Christian Petroni since I first saw him on Food Network and was excited to check out his first cookbook. Trust me this is going to make you want to run to your kitchen. A few of the recipes I am looking forward to making are: Shrimp Parm, Aglio Olio, Chicken Francese, Fried Calamari, Fried Meatballs, and of course the Fresh Mozzarella Sticks. Do you want to bring a little bit of Italian American recipes into you own kitchen? Comment parm for the link to order your copy today. Rarely do you find a cookbook that is as interesting as a regular book even when you aren’t even cooking from it (yet), however that is exactly what you get with Hemingway's Spanish Table: A Culinary Journey in 60+ Recipes. As a huge fan of Hemingway – The Sun Also Rises is one of my favorite novels – I knew I had to add this cookbook to my collection. A few of the recipes included are Sopa De Ajo (Garlic Soup), Papa Doble (Hemingway Daiquiri), Croquetas De Jamon (Ham Croquettes), Solomillo Al Whiskey (Pork Tenderloin with Whiskey Sauce), Torrijas (French Toast), Almejas Con Chorizo (Clams with Sausage), Pimientos Rellenos (Stuffed Roasted Peppers), Pisto (Ratatouille), Tarte De Queso (Basque “Burnt” Cheesecake), and Paella Valenciana (Chicken and Rabbit Rice). I hope this sneak peek sparks your interest as this is a cookbook that you definitely want in your collection!
